LABOR OF LOVE

The story of a couple in their 30s who have bought a broken-down farmhouse in the Morvan in France. They have several misadventures until they meet Pim, an irrepressible expatriate American who’s had a long life, four wives and an astonishing number of offspring, many named Rufus. Pim takes charge of their projects, including their thus-far unsuccessful attempts to produce a baby. His zany prescriptions for success at l’amour include love potions, syzygy, pigeons, purple cows and homemade hot tubs that turn into mud baths. Yet it’s the magic of Pim’s love affair with life that holds the key to conception, and his simple wisdom that imparts the bittersweet knowledge that joy and sorrow are never far apart in this world. This novel came out in 1982 and has been remaindered. Copies may still be found on Amazon.
